Wollongong Symphony Orchestra

With the premiere concert in October 2004, the Wollongong Symphony Orchestra began a series of concerts, which honour both the well-loved classics, and the innovative compositions of local and international composers.

The Orchestra has a four concert subscription series each year, which features soloists from within the orchestra and invited guests. Members of the orchestra are drawn from the local area along with professional musicians from the surrounding regions. With a short rehearsal period and a well-prepared repertoire, the musicians produce an experience which delights their audiences and is remembered always for its magic.

The mission of the Orchestra is to make classical music accessible to the whole community. The combination of art forms such as visual, dance and drama with the musical, seeks to assist in connecting the music with its new and experienced audiences. To bring the popular classics, the not so often heard treasures and the new music of today to the Wollongong audiences is the intent of the Wollongong Symphony Orchestra. The Conductor, Dr Carlos Alvarado, along with Concert Master, Alexandra Loukianova, work with the musicians and production team to “unlock” the wonders of the classical repertoire for the communities of the Illawarra. Opportunities for a seat in the orchestra are given to young musicians who audition at an appropriate level of competence. Auditions are held each December for inclusion on the Wollongong Symphony Orchestra database.

"Glean from the Wollongong Symphony Orchestra the same enjoyment and satisfaction that I feel every time I conduct. Give your orchestra a long and rewarding life and you and your children will have a lifelong gift of great worth – the gift of beautiful music." Carlos Alvarado

Carlos Alvarado has a Doctorate in Orchestra and Opera Conducting from the Tchaikovsky Conservatorium of Music in Moscow where he studied under Gennardy Rozhdestvensky. He has also received a Master of Fine Arts in Choir Conducting from the same Conservatorium.
